Horizon of Khufu: The Future of the Past

Take a unique journey to Ancient Egypt through an immersive virtual reality experience called Horizon of Khufu near Columbus Circle – your location for exploring the great Pyramid of Giza and cultural mores of this expansive Egyptian era, spanning from 3100 B.C to 30 B.C. This V.R. type of learning about the past feels very much like the future because lessons are imparted during what feels like a spectacular lucid dream. Information is presented by a lifelike tour guide named Mona as you approach and enter the majestic pyramid, and your surroundings will seem very lifelike. There were a few times when, perched at a great height, I thought I might fall off off a rock if I went too close to its edge. I also wanted to touch an item, and had to remind myself that I was in a V.R. world – much as we remind ourselves that we’re only dreaming.

I don’t want to reveal too much of the jaw-dropping surprises in the tour — and there are many — except to say you will be astounded by the gorgeous vistas from the pyramids and the other locations you venture into in this 45-minute trip. You’ll see the jewelry worn at the time, take a solar boat ride, see The Nile, explore tombs, and will learn more about burial rituals. The Egyptians named the Great Pyramids of Giza “Ahket Khufu” – the Horizon of Khufu. Your journey through one of the ancient world’s Seven Wonders begins just outside of Cairo.

My first feeling upon completing the tour was that I wanted to go back and do it again, and I’ve had that “I wish it wouldn’t end” feeling after a few great dreams, too. There are other V.R. historical eras coming to this site in the future that will be incredible: Tonight With The Impressionists in 1874, Life Chronicles (spanning the 3.5 billion-year history of Earth and life itself) and Eternal Notre-Dame. Another amazing aspect of the experience is that when it’s over, it feels as though you have walked a great distance for 45 minutes, and yet you can see that you did not cover much territory in the space at all. Magical!
