Not only is study of the stars and heavenly bodies one of the most ancient activities known to man, the treasure chest of wisdom comprising contemporary horoscopic astrology as we know it is an outcome of syncretism and storytelling occurring across many cultures and continents. Reading the heavens is one way human beings have perceived their relationship with nature as an intricate and interconnected mirror, embraced the cyclical quality of time and assumed their part in an orderly Universe. Needless to say today astrology tends to be perceived as pseudoscience rather than fact. Without a doubt astrology has endured throughout the ages in various forms, experiencing distinct spikes in popularity during times of uncertainty, calamity and global crisis as users flock to its semblance of comfort in knowing. That being said, astrology is neither determinative nor fatalistic. At best, it is a most poetic form of divination you can call upon to access self-awareness, achieve heart-opening transpersonal understanding and increase tolerance as you make sense of reality moment to moment, lifetime to lifetime.
And while the stories we tell about big planets like Jupiter and Saturn may have emerged originally out of indigenous agricultural mythology – our current archetypes appear to be as disconnected from nature and feminine energy as mankind itself. The big players of astrology swathed in the trappings of Roman and Greek patriarchy tend to be coded as male (Fire/Air) and tend to glorify war, profits and cheating on your wife amongst other aims of toxic masculinity. As Alice Sparky Kat writes in Post-Colonial Astrology: Reading Planets through Capital, Power and Labor, the “Myth of Jupiter superseding Saturn is really a myth about political power wrestling natural sovereignty away.” And who is Jupiter you ask, the violent baddie we have somehow come to call BENEFIC?
All the Gods one might associate with Jupiter – Shango, Oya, Indra, Zojz, Perun, Set, Parjanya, Vajrapani, Susanoo, Zeus, Marduk, Thor, Thunor, Bussamarus, Huracán, Xob, Haikili, among many others – are associated with wind, lightening and storms. In a nutshell, the rise of Jupiter is the story of how the ancient gynocracy was overthrown by the divine father principle, or rather, the story of marriage and women as property. Interesting that the asteroids themselves are all ‘children,’ of Juno and Jupiter. The sacred marriage or ‘civil union’ between Juno and Jupiter secured male privilege, subordinated women and worked as a weapon against indigenous kinship networks. Think ‘nuclear family’ verses tribe, clan, sisterhood and intergenerational communities. “Jupiter is imperialism that disguises itself as tourism,” writes Sparkly Kat.
As the Guardian of marriage and childbirth, his wife Juno chooses relationship. Embodiment of the triple Goddess, during the Age of Taurus Juno was worshipped as a cow-eyed sky queen. Jupiter meanwhile destroyed Juno’s Goddess cults and forbid her to worship the feminine way, oppressing her through enforced monogamy while flaunting his infidelities. While Juno gave her power away to Jupiter, she raged when he turned it against her. In this light Juno represents both the need for relationship and the refusal to accept unfair circumstances – even if it means rage, revenge, plotting and/or being a shrew. All the while, contained within Juno’s separation from Jupiter and hiding is return and reconciliation (learn more in my June BEAUTYSCOPE Juno: Queen of the Three Gems). Ultimately, Juno’s sacrifices lay the groundwork for Psyche (the realization of soulmate union) and the other asteroids to proceed with the future of evolution in human consciousness.
Before the discovery of asteroids, the only feminine significators in astrology were Venus and the Moon. Like Lilith (perhaps the best known of the bunch, who also takes separate forms as Black Moon Lilith and Dark Moon Lilith), the illumination of the asteroids’ meanings within our psyches involves conjuring disavowed aspects of the primordial feminine. The asteroids are like specialty energies, more nuanced but nonetheless, a substantive part of our feminine psychological makeup. In their groundbreaking book ASTEROID GODDESSES Demetra George and Douglas Bloch explore how the asteroid’s expansive non-binary trajectory represents a ‘quantum leap’ for human consciousness, facilitating evolution from individual ego understanding to collective interconnectivity. Without asteroids, our solar system would be unintuitive and orthogonal. Study of astro-feminism is a centering and life-sustaining gesture – demons and spirits putting us in right relationship with the land.
Counterbalancing modern economies fueled by divisive fear and greed, collaborative astrological inquiries such as the study of the outerlying queer feminist asteroids relies on empathy and solidarity. It entails moving beyond the Sun-sign’s proverbial ‘I’ to envision community-wide efforts including commitment to daily spiritual hygiene, conscious eros, birth and land justice and an increased social justice IQ reflecting deeply on dynamics of privilege, power and access. This involves continuing to engage in meaning-making as serious play, questioning traditional modes of validation, advocating for the value of truly radical creative work and working with other like-minds to create hybrid, non-hierarchical, revolutionary networks of versatile change-making, experimentation, engagement and possibility. By correcting the patriarchal monopoly on the mythic imaginary, destiny and what’s possible – understanding of the asteroids enables us to collectively explore new ways of cohabitating together as fellow human beings.
Interesting that most of the articles I researched to write this piece on Hygeia were published during the early years of the pandemic. A dwarf planet orbiting the asteroid belt, Hygeia – a heavenly body associated with holistic wellbeing, self-empowerment, purification and feminine healing arts – previously rose to fame following the plague of Athens which killed over 80,000 people in 430 BC. Combining science and sensibility, nature and culture, Hygeia ‘Asteroid of Health Consciousness’ was discovered in 1849. Taking just over five and a half years to orbit the Sun, astronomers correlate her rather random changes over time with the massive gravitational pull of nearby planets Jupiter and Saturn. Referred to as the ‘Great Benefic’ and ‘Great Malefic’ respectively, her placement sandwiched between them suggests being caught in the cross-purposes of idealism (Jupiter) and conservatism (Saturn). In line with use of ancient, indigenous knowledge of plant medicine (which should never be termed ‘alternative medicine’ – it is the ORIGINAL!) Hygeia is about prevention, not cure. Some call her the daughter of Asclepius, a Heroic God of Medicine (in some myths she is his wife). In Rome Hygeia took on the name Salus, also known as the Goddess of health, social welfare and prosperity.
Statues of Hygeia were erected in healing centers and temples. In one hand Hygeia holds an alchemical mixing bowl. Coinciding with The Cup of Tarot, her chalice or bowl reminds us that thy cup runneth over with limitless potentialities. In other words – when our heart is calm and our soul filled with love, our health too is in peak form. In her remaining hand, Hygeia holds a snake. This image of Hygeia is perhaps most notably immortalized in the 1970 allegorical painting by Gustav Klimt, where we find the Goddess of Health portrayed with a golden snake coiling around her arm – a symbol of Asklepion medicine as well as the Earth Mother and Matriarchal culture overturned. Acting as a lighting rod which conducts her powers of quantum healing, the snake symbol identifies Hygeia as the original ‘Medicine Woman’ – a cosmic portal of healing energy. Interesting that the asteroid body’s surface itself reveals two dark craters which have been informally named ‘Serpent’ and ‘Chalice’ (from the Latin Serpens and Calix).
Along those same lines, Hygeia’s astrological glyph is a straight line or rod in the middle of three coiled circles growing in size from the base up. Also known as the caduceus – her glyph is symbolic of two snakes winding around the staff of magician healer Mercury (both the god who rescues people from death and the psychopomp who guides them through the underworld). It’s a sign embedded within the logo of the World Health Organization, as well as pharmacies and doctors’ offices the world over. To this day when physicians become official they must swear upon Hygeia’s name to be ‘ethical’ in their practice according to oath. Representing the interwoven fabric of the left and right brain, the equilibrium between the inside and the outside – Hygeia’s serpent in hand signifies the cyclical nature of life. Interesting to note how astrologer Divine Harmony refers to astrology and astronomy (which long ago were considered ‘twin sciences’ that advanced in tandem) as “Two wings of the butterfly, the left brain and right brain.” Whereas Asclepius ‘Father of Medicine’ hands out remedies to the sick, his daughter Hygeia teaches the ways of preventing sickness. Her rules of health and hygiene encompass everything from self-care to optimal nutrition, strengthening of the immune system and attentiveness to mental health.
At the alchemical level her snake symbol is associated with kundalini rising. Kundalini, Sanskrit for ‘serpent power,’ refers to the rising of creative-sexual life force energy from the base of the spine to the crown. Physiologically, this is described in yogic terms as the physical interweaving of two inner channels known as pingala (masculine) and ida (feminine). Astrologically speaking, kundalini rises according to cycles of the planet Uranus (the ‘Great Awakener’). While it’s certainly a state which can be achieved at any point in life through embodied here-and-now yogic techniques, our Uranus Square around ages 40-42 triggers a climactic spiritual crisis. In Astrology and the Rising of Kundalini Barbara Hand Clow explains how the physiological and emotional symptoms of a ‘midlife crisis’ in fact mirror the symptoms of kundalini rising. During the Uranus square at mid-life, one experiences bodily symptoms according to which chakra is blocked.
Just as Vishnu, the ‘Sustainer’ of Hindu myth, stretches out on a serpent called endless, we can work with the serpent archetype at the physical, psychological and spiritual level to attain the state of wholeness necessary for true health and happiness. Hygeia’s association with the serpent’s qualities of transmutation highlights why often our deepest inner work involves naming and claiming the semi-conscious reptilian parts of the brain which hold instinctual wisdom. Snakes, as ground-dwelling creatures existent in nature, hell and the underworld – are a most ancient symbol of the feminine forces of life, death and regeneration. Representing both wisdom and fear – the snake reminds us that the latter emotion is not a roadblock but rather a guide to our soul evolution. Hygeia is often depicted adjacent Goddess Athena, who shares her affinity for serpents. In the Mother-Daughter polarity evidenced in asteroids Ceres/Athena we observe sexual-creative kundalini energy (Root/IC) expressed as procreation and/or creative mental progeny (Crown/MC). Much like Hygeia’s rod of serpent power, Pallas Athena’s connection to her crone trinity form (Medusa’s head of snakes) is a most ancient symbol reminding us that the best medicine is teaching someone how not to need it.
Let’s reflect back on last month’s Full Supermoon in Taurus November 15th. Not only was La Luna exalted in Taurus, it was officially conjunct fixed Demon Star Algol – a mythic figure positioned at the third-eye of Medusa’s Head. Interesting that the medical term ‘Algology’ means the study of pain. Lodged in the forehead of Medusa, ‘Demon Star’ Algol is found in the constellation Perseus, the hero known for slaying gorgon Medusa’s head off. Given the influence of the Sun in Scorpio, this full moon was about conducting the inner surgery needed to forge an empowering connective bridge between trauma and wisdom. With the election results halving just been released here in the United States, for many the full moon felt like clamoring along an excruciatingly painful psychological web. Here we find that the serpent of Hygeia isn’t merely a symbol of medicine, and that holistic health includes our psychological work, what many in the divine feminine camp call shadow work or the descent of the Goddess. With Scorpio representing the underworld and death and Taurus representing steadiness and fertility; this full moon was an invitation to stop externalizing our pain. Think trees losing their leaves in Fall while rooting down in preparation for winter survival. At this full moon we were called to create the slow, mindful self-awareness which enables us to move out of victim consciousness and apply the wisdom we’ve learned in service to the greater good.
