Frequent riders of the 7 train may have noticed some new structures in the Citi Field parking lots. As we previously reported, a huge blue and white tent has recently popped up housing the Circus Vazquez, an animal-free circus combining exciting acts like acrobats, aerialists, and even an orchestra. Now, just across the tracks, colorful lights are beckoning onlookers from afar to another attraction where adventure awaits.
Big Lights Will Inspire You
With technicolor lanterns and majestic dioramas, the Tianyu Lights Festival weaves together the story of a child’s rainforest imaginings. If you’re new to large-scale lanterns (like me), prepare to be impressed! The flora and fauna along this jungle trail are massive and gorgeous, while the combination of lights, sounds, and robotics is nothing short of an engineering marvel. On the night I checked out the festival, the small children in attendance were captivated by the exhibits and seemed to really enjoy discovering each new station along the path.
Game Time
The Tianyu Lights Festival also has a variety of interactive elements. In addition to the endless opportunities to take photos against a spectacular backdrop, a number of lighted swings and electronic games placed throughout the exhibit offer some hands-on fun. For an added challenge, guests who follow the hints provided on plaques along the trail and complete all the tasks can earn a prize on their way out.
A Stroll for Two?
While the young may be easily awed by the bigger-than-life installations, the food and entertainment might just win over the young at heart. This vibrant setting could even be the spot for a perfect first date! Walking through the LED jungle takes around an hour, but if the conversation is going well the evening could be extended by watching the live music and dance performances. The food court has covered seating, making it a possible locale for nailing down that second date. (And who knows, if things go really well, you could even come back together for a baseball game in the spring!)
A Light Bite
There are a handful of food vendors at the festival. I spotted sweets like character-shaped cotton candy and Tanghulu (Chinese candied fruits on a stick). Noodles and savory dishes were being cooked up as well. I opted for the combo from C Bao that comes with an Asian bun of your choice (the duck slaps) and a hot chocolate for $12.
