An Escape Game With an ‘Only Murders in the Building’ Twist

X-Rays and Only Murders in the Building poster on bulletin board. As Mabel, Oliver, and Charles return for season four of “Only Murders in the Building,” fans of the show are happily tuning into Hulu to see the sleuthing trio back in action. This time around some of the storyline takes place in Hollywood, but “Only Murders” hasn’t left New York entirely in its rearview mirror.

Now, there’s an “Only Murders” experience that won’t require leaving Manhatty. I had the chance to try my luck at this challenge and was happy to learn The Escape Game is located in an easy-to-reach spot just a little over a block from Grand Central. After arriving, getting locked in, and watching a funny intro film that explains the objective of the game, the 60-minute clock kicked off the adventure.

From there, much like in the series, we had to piece together clues to help solve a mystery all while trying to beat the buzzer. Inside the themed rooms, the puzzles were intricate and creative. Several moments saw us oohing and aahing at the special effects. While no knowledge of “Only Murders” is necessary to succeed, followers of the show will likely appreciate all the little nods to the series.

At The Escape Game, the staff was super friendly. Their affability could easily help melt away any anxiety that comes with facing the thought of being locked in a room with only your mental skills to get you out. (Let’s just say, it was a lot less awkward than riding the elevator at the Arconia looks!)

Amy Hamblen

After spending over a decade in New York, Amy Hamblen is still impressively bad at giving directions around the city. Fortunately, she makes up for it with an abundance of solid happy hour recommendations. Amy is originally from Indiana, and whether or not her years spent covering the food and entertainment scene in NYC has earned her a seat at the table may be debatable, but it's of little consequence — she much prefers a stool at the bar.
