Put Your Best Foot Forward in Comfort and Style With Rex Shoes

Comfortable shoes are an oxymoron in my world, having tortured my feet for decades in high heels, believing there was nothing fashionable that felt good. Fortunately, today there are more options than just sneakers to wear on long walks, or just navigating the New York City sidewalks. Despite the options, many shoes that are marketed as comfortable, are not. I recently discovered Rex Shoes, and for so many reasons, I am obsessed. The brand and styles are new, having launched in 2023, but are rooted in a family business with dedication to making quality footwear.

Nanette Adair’s family came from France to New Orleans and founded Rex Shoes in 1863. Today, Adair has created an entirely new brand. “I always wanted to reimagine Rex Shoes,” said Adair. After Rex Shoes closed in 1985, she decided to reinvigorate the brand. Adair has a business school background, and years of solid business experience, but has never designed shoes. Undeterred, she was determined to bring her vision of comfortable, yet classic and stylish footwear for women, to fruition, despite the challenges. “A business is a business,” she said.

“I don’t know of one designer who isn’t putting a comfort facet in their shoes,” Adair said. “The inspiration was a classic line that stays true to its style,” she said. Rex Shoes are handcrafted in Spain, using lambskin or suede uppers, and are lined with goatskin. Adair explained that the lambskin molds to your feet and provides metatarsal support, which increases the comfort of the shoe. In addition, Rex Shoes have custom made arch support insoles, making each step like walking on air.

Wearing a pair of Rex Shoes truly feels like walking on air, and in the streets of New York City, which is no easy feat (no pun intended). When I step out in Rex Shoes I am invariably stopped and asked what shoes I have on. Adair said that the same thing happens to her all the time. The thick, white soles, perforated leather, and unique shades definitely attract attention. Adair keeps most of the shoes in neutral colors but has added some unique and bright colors for variety. The Fall Collection is launching soon, with some different touches but will remain true to the classic styles.

“I see the future as growth,” Adair said. “The product lines and styles will stay the same but with some twists,” she said. “I will add one or two more styles, a mule, a boot and a sandal, and keep the colors happy and confident,” Adair said. She believes consistency is important in business and wants Rex Shoes to be a brand that consumers can trust. “Be truthful, love what you produce, and put your best foot forward, literally.”
